Only when I return to Ogichi and the backcountry am I completely at peace. No lightbulbs, no computer, and no humming of electricity.

I was standing at the highest point on our property on a mostly bare rock, looking out at the beautiful frozen expanse of Rainy Lake. This would be the site of the first camper cabin.

From afternoon baths in aquamarine pools to the excitement of encountering a grizzly bear watching us from the shore, each moment became an unexpected memento.

The red canoes are carefully slipped into the frigid water, causing slight ripples across the lake that eventually fade into its great mass.

“Nobody owns spiritual principles,” said Pebaam. “They are universal, and you can apply these ideas to everything that you do.”

I was getting overwhelmed, comparing myself to all the people around me who seemed so secure—until something clicked. Why not contribute something honest instead?

Equipped with a GoPro, a camera and a microphone, our very own Alice Petty captured Ogichi’s exploratory trip down the Mountain River this summer.

You might know her best as a cheerful presence in the Ogichi kitchen, but Erica Roodhouse is many things: an avid traveler, a studious Buddhist, a textile artist, a tireless volunteer, a mother of five.

The Mountain River is on the bucket list of many experienced canoeists, and we are beyond excited to honor Ogichi’s unique path and tripping style by exploring the region.

Remarkably, we now have eight camper cabins, home to 122 campers and staff members each session. The last of these cabins, Snowshoe Hare, will be finished and ready for full occupancy this summer.

In its 15-year history, Ogichi has sent out two extended canoe trips, one down the Churchill River in 2010 and another down the Cochrane River in 2016. This summer, we will send out two more.
